You are not a gadget

by Jaron Lanier is filled with interesting ideas, but unfortunately these ideas are arranged in a way that you are fragmented, repetitive, undeveloped and confusing. Recently I read somewhere that the book was compiled from Lanier wired columns and if it does, it explains structure or lack thereof of the book.

Lanier is a computer scientist, musician and pioneer in virtual reality. The man can be faulted anti computer or anti-Internet.He is an about Nerd.Und so for him to write a book about the pitfalls of technology well, I was happy to bite.

Lanier's main theme and warning in the book centers around he cybernetic 'totalism called'.It is the belief among many other uber nerds in things like the singularity (if computers are smarter than people) and the intelligence the hive Geist.Das problem with this kind of thinking is it rides individuality group think promotes and entmenschlicht.Diejenigen who believe and promote believe the hive mind, that quantity to quality extreme scale, and that is

Wisdom is a million, or perhaps a billion, fragmentary insults finally who each exceeds well thought out essay, for so long that sophisticated secret statistical algorithms recombine fragments.

I was constantly reminded in very old schtick that thousand monkeys typing away eventually a Shakespeare play be schreiben.Wir made by the cybernetic 'totalism'-Folk believe that this inevitable, that the way currently develops computers and technology are not stopped or changed that resistance is futile and we will all eventually be assimilated in what amounts to the real version of the Borg in Star Trek, and we will all, intelligent and happier for it.

Lanier counters that develop on computers your own, people make decisions about the creation and use of technology, nothing is inevitable, and we have the right to question to resist and technology which instead a tool for our purposes of employees, to require the services of technology.

It is a good argument, and one Moreover you must considered and discussed.Unfortunately, the argument is not really fully developed and what develops is self-righteous in a continuous and coherent building of examples and studies and argument, but in bits and pieces that are sometimes and sometimes inlaid in the jargon that calls never satisfactorily defined is not.

There are other issues and arguments in the book too, but you are only fragmentary and even more difficult to play zusammen.Und then relinquishes the tangents that expires Lanier it how research in olfactory science and why we still have smell-o-vision and some wild theories about, as the development of language in humans to our sense of smell linked could be.

Overall, I was disappointed, expected in the Buch.Ich is clear Lanier more Kohärenz.Es a smart guy who much about technology issues has thought but while it further on the evils of "cloud goes" he fails from its own cloud enough to deliver a coherent argument that is understood by many people not yet know, the difference between a right mouse button click and one left click on the Earth kommen.Und which is a shame because it you, perhaps as much as or more so than the computer savvy, who must understand the issues and what is at stake.
