Sixteen-year-old Mackie Doyle's only mission in life can be summed up succinctly. Don't. Stand. Out. Mackie is a replacement, a creature, the links in the trade when a human baby from the crib in the small town of Gentry disappears. Although the long-suffering community has accepted him as the son of the local preacher, he could persuade suspend never limits its apathy and risk his cruel birthright. Resigned to his health restrictions - he draws allergies to consecrated ground, blood and iron, from its part in the masquerade with support from its dedicated sister Emma and intrepid friend Roswell until its time expires. Addressed a grisly foreign its to announce impending doom, Mackie rises in the slithering underworld of mayhem, located under gentry, in the hope of salvation. Yovanoff deserves great credit for craft original premise and atmospheric Roman to fill the pages of this Kingdom with attractive generally human (and close to human) characters. Some readers may be made when the action heads underground and the focus shifting scrambling is on a crew of troublemakers and culprits that further their handling that are worthy as frightening. Fans of Carrie Jones and Melissa Marr will take another be amazed to faerie lore.
